Art Fair San Li Tun

The affordable art fair was a big success for Plastered art works, we sold 3 pieces of the stained glass which now brings my total to 6. I really wasn’t expecting to sell anything as they were priced quite high. I got loads of text messages and emails from those who went to the show and saw the windows which was really nice. It was also nice to see so many people gathering around them at the show. Now I’m working on my next idea which is incredibly complicated but should be a lot of fun.

University Students from California

This week I got to give a talk on creative entrepreneurship to the university of southern California. A group of 40+ students who were all super excited about being in Beijing and meeting business and creative types. My talk went really well and they really enjoyed listening to one foreigners perspective on how to do business in Beijing.
Today the whole group descended on my store on nan Luo Gu Xiang, they all bought up tones of t shirts which was nice and then I took them down into the tunnels underneath Beijing near my home on Nan Luo Gu Xiang, its a bit of a secrete place and its about to be destroyed so it was a big thrill for me and them. I wish i had been smart enough to go to University, they were such a nice bunch of people.

Danwei T-shirt Competition

Plastered and danwei.org have teamed up for an online competition to designdanwei.org a t-shirt. The winning design wins 888 RMB cash so give it a go. I’ll be judging the designs along with a panel of very interesting folk. Once the winning design is chosen Plastered will tweak it so it’s silk screen friendly and then you’ll be able to buy the design exclusively from Plastered outlets.

Got this screen shot from a mate who happened to be watching “Lu You Wei Shi” tv station when these two beautiful presenters appeared Plastered. I was told they were talking about retro.

Micromu

In one of my first entries I wrote about www.micromu.com, a brilliant idea that was thrown at me from the guys at Red-T music. We always wanted to get involved in music so this seemed like the perfect plan. In their own words: “MicroMu is an experimental, sponsor-driven, free-to-user record label model designed to discover new talent, create original music and reward artists in seemingly impossible conditions. All music is available for free download through www.MicroMu.com.”

So they had the concept and Plastered helped out with financial support and it has been a huge success due to the hard work and commitment from the lads and ladies at Red-T Music. I asked them for some stats last week and here are a few interesting facts:

- They have hit over a quarter of a million page views after just six months. Traffic continues to grow at roughly 40% every month.
- They now have a total of 12 releases, the majority of which are awarded 4 or 5 stars by Internet users on various sites.
- Zhang Weiwei was voted one of the top 10 independent (Chinese language) albums of 2008 by the users of uber-site Douban. Featured as a top album of 2008 in Beijing Xinjinbao.
- MicroMu was on the front page of QQ bookmark charts for 48 hours.
- They have had feature coverage in So Rock, INMusic, X Music Magazine, City Pictorial.
- Their most recent album, Li Zhi, is stuck fast on the front page of Douban.

Very impressive and an honour to be involved.

Royal Debacle

I’m not that proud of this entry, a bit of a rock and roll moment to be honest. It turns out the only picture of all the winners of the awards with Prince Andrew was this one. Me flicking a V and looking very aggressive. Now the reason for this was I’d been waiting a while for the picture to be taken so in the end I flicked the V and that was the moment that got caught. So a bit of a dilemma for the organisers when sticking the picture in the paper.

So look at what happened now, here is a scan of the China daily article. Me with new head and I lost an arm. My face was taken from another photo and I look a little brighter than the others. Silly me, but something by the time the first grand child is born that I’ll be proud of, right now, still feel a little silly.

And just to make the last two weeks even more ridiculous, I got a letter in the post from Buckingham Palace, something my mother has been dreaming of since I was born. Really nice and personal letter and I’ve never seen such fancy paper, now I need a good frame and a proper place in the toilet for it.
