I had a really pleasant surprise today when Beijing Renmin Guang Buo Dian Tai (Beijing’s People’s Radio) presented me with a lovely award. I got second prize for the best interview on their station. Its not often I win prizes, in fact I’ve only won 2, conker champion on Barfield school in 1981 and British Entrepreneur of the year in China in 2008. This second prize will be hung on my wall at home along with the others. So …thank you very much Beijing People’s radio for the certificate and a lovely clock.

In the quest to continue to create something new I had an idea to work with local tattoo artists I randomly met one day through my dear friend Li Peng of Reflector Band fame. He introduced me to Wang Ke and her husband, they have their own tattoo studio on Bei Luo Gu Xiang. I spent several hours with them giving them ideas for Plastered tattoo I wanted to create. The results so far have been spectacular. Working with local artists has been a theme for Plastered since we started back in 2006, its particularly nice when they live 400m from your home and you don’t have to leave the hu tongs.

The idea for this tattoo came from revolutionary opera, something I’ve always wanted to work on, I explained to Wang Ke, who drew this particular bit of artwork, that i wished to have two sexy ladies holding guns a mention of my home Beijing and the rest was pretty much down to Wang Ke. We have 3 more tattoo inspired pieces in the mix right now, we also have a special Plastered tattoo logo. I will post them here as soon as they are finished.

Here are some pics of Wang Ke and her husband and the artwork.

When I moved to Nan Luo Gu Xiang in 2003 with my family to pursue our dream of living in a shared courtyard and create a big family I never expected Nan Luo Gu Xiang to boom the way it has. After I opened Plastered in May 2006 I watched the street flourish, lots of other cool brands came along and some great cafes and restaurants too. Recently however a lot of these restaurants and shops are closing down which is a real shame.

Notably Mirch Masala the Indian restaurant closed its doors after the rent went up to 600,000rmb a year, the boss from Indian closed up and moved to Ri Tan to open another in a cheaper location. Fish Nation also just closed its doors, probably Beijing’s best fish and chip restaurant, I’m not sure about their rent but I know its gone very high. Then today saddest of all Grifted closed shop, probably my favorite brand on the street, they actually created something new rather than copying Plastered, which was very refreshing.

Its going to be hard to keep the street cool, traditionally the small creative brands are not always the best at business, so as rents go up they have to leave and in their place all too often open up generic tourist shops doing nothing but resale which is boring. So as the street become more boring the rents will go down again, its much like the landlords are committing suicide going for the highest possible price only to ruin the streets feel and then the rents go down again.

Here are a few pics taken in 2004. I’m certainly not going to be closing shop, I feel passionate about creative new products and designs to inspire our much loved customers, I also feel passionately about Nan Luo Gu Xiang, where I started my business and where my 3 daughters have lived since they were born in Beijing.

About one year ago my eldest daughter Prudence (wang Tian Tian) gave me the idea to create some stain glass images for the shop. I had 4 artists work on 4 different Chinese leaders and the graphic results were stunning. Now finally I have all 4 as glass windows. They arrived all the way from JiangXu province this week and put a big smile on my face. Here are pictures took of all 4 windows today in my courtyard and Deng xiao Ping in the shop. I will be selling limited editions of these windows at the Affordable Art Fair Beijing in San Li Tun village on April 24th and 25th.
For more info on the Affordable Art fair please go to this link.

I’m feeling British today! Which is strange because after spending half of my life here in Beijing I sometimes forget where I’m from. The reason I’m feeling more British than usual is because of the chap in this photo, the new British Ambassador to China, Sebastian Wood CMG. A couple of weeks ago I was invited to attend a function at the British Embassy to meet the new Ambassador, and that I did: a really nice bloke. We talked very briefly, I gave him my card, and then invited him round to my humble home for a cup of tea. What I didn’t expect was for him to actually give me a ring and come over on his bicycle over Chinese New Year and visit our rather chaotic home on Nanluoguxiang. We spent a great afternoon with Ambassador Wood in the hutongs, where we live. Royal Britannia!

Sun Zi and the artof War Reality TV program

Last summer I spent 3 weeks being filmed by BBC reality TV crew who were filming a show called Sun Zi Art the of War. Its a 13 part series and in each program they film 13 businesses around the world and then break down those businesses and call in celebrity CEOs and give you a challenge and advice on how to improve your business using the principles of Sun Zi, that famous Chinese book. It was pretty stressful but all in all quite good fun. The host James Sun was a runner up in the reality TV show The Apprentice in the USA and a very nice guy. It starts airing in Singapore this month and here is a trailer for the program which I am quite heavily featured in. My challenge was to hold a big event to show off my brand which was our Plastered Rock Weekend last year in which we attracted over 1000 people to, a big success that helped us drum up new customers and attract a lot of media attention. Once I get my hands on the DVD of my episode I will stick it online for those of you who might want to see.

Here is link to trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwNdwpvjs0c

For those of you without access to youtube in China will post a youku link soon.

I’ve done a tone of TV shows but usually on my own and these shows cover a lot of topics. This show I had no idea was so popular until I walked out of my home on Friday and got recognised by every other person I walked past. My poor wife who was also pulled into this show was spotted at the airport several times too and had to pose for photos. The host Ying Da I had met previously back in 1997 when he was directing a Chinese sitcom called “Chinese Restaurant” which I starred in all be it very briefly acting as a screen writer. See attached photos of me with hair acting in the sitcom. Those were the days.

Well BTV called me on Sunday to tell me the viewer statistics which I didn’t really understand much of but they said it was extremely high. So despite that idiot that followed me and my daughter into our house on Friday its all been really good, had a great affect on shop sales, people from all warps of life coming to the shop to buy stuff. Here is the BTV program online if you fancy watching.
