Smart Talk with Dominic Johnson-Hill
Taking place on the 19th and 20th in Xi’an and Nanjing, and fresh from his recent appearance on CCTV 2’s 创意中国星 (Chuang Yi Zhong Guo Xing) CEO, founder and creator of Plastered 8 t-shirts, Dominic Johnson-Hill will join us for two more exciting and interactive Smart Talk sessions.
Organized by the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy, the talks will explain the development of the Plastered 8 brand; it’s revolutionary past, it’s frenetic present, and it’s burgeoning future.
Started by Dominic Johnson Hill 2006 with just 4000 RMB, both the brand has now become a brand widely recognised across China as a socially, creatively and culturally aware iconic business with a strong grass-roots base. Plastered 8 is a fantastic representation of the benefits that a wealth of cultural and international experience can bring.
Uniquely combining international experience with traditional techniques, the brand from its beginning has been a community driven company that has remained close to original principles regularly working with charities and supporting young Chinese based creative talents, to create designs that are not only representative of the local community but also stylistically innovative.
Smart Talk is a programme featuring innovative and inspiring speakers from the UK. It aims to be a 360°experience that gives audiences the opportunity to interact with and develop better understanding about UK culture, education and innovation.

I got a bit of a surprise when i saw that the usual area for our stage was under construction at Gu Xiang 20. So I worked hard with the local government to find a suitable place for the stage this year and we found a great space just off nan luo gu xiang at Tian Lao Hu Tong that runs all the way to Qian Yuan En Si Hu Tong. Its an old destroyed courtyard home with loads of space. So inside we will have the Imart create flea market as well as the stage and a wall that we will have live graffiti show. There will be signs on Nan Luo Gu Xiang to direct you to the location, its about a 20 metre walk just off the main street.

This October the home of our flagship store Nan Luo Gu Xiang will have a festival partly organised by Plastered again. This year we’ve decided that we’d like to celebrate our treasured customers by letting them sit in our shop window and drink, whatever they like, on us, for 50 minutes wearing their favourite plastered t shirt which will be given to you free from Plastered. Its your 50 minutes of fame. We will provide a comfortable chair, all the drink you need hard or soft, and a pizza from Gung Ho Pizza and thousands of people walking past. All you have to do is team up with a friend (two people at a time) send us your photos, name and phone number to window@plasteredtshirts.com and we will contact you with your time slot.
A few months back I filmed a really big TV show that I did tones of preparation work for, I had to present my business to some of China’s most successful businessmen and persuade them to invest in my business. The show will air on Oct 2nd on CCTV2 at 9:20 pm. Its called Chuang Yi Zhong Guo Xing (Entrepreneur Stars of China). Its a great time to be on TV over the national holiday so its pretty exciting for the brand but what happens in the show is quite exciting too. You’ll have to tune in to see the result.

Plastered has teamed up with super cool 08/15 bags to produce a real beauty with more coming! This design is 1970s Beijing duffle bag style with a stunning stencil of the iconic Beijing Hotel on it. Screen-printed onto bright blue with great affect. Made from truck tarp, this bag is super strong and comes with many extras too; a detachable and extendable key reel and detachable mobile phone pocket, and a super strong adjustable seat belt strap. The bag can also be extended to almost twice its size to fit all your goodies.

Zip-ups have arrived in Beijing
Our new zip-ups are now in store and online featuring more districts of Beijing; now you can proudly wear Xi Cheng (west side…) and Chao Yang.
Hero 1&2
These heroic ladies were originally featured in a 1970s poster encouraging women to take active roles in society. The text on the bottom reads “women’s hero”. We’ve featured a military hero and a scientist as our Plastered heroes.

The Nan Luo Gu Xiang festival is confirmed for October 16th and 17th so I’m now trying to put together the music and art for the festival. Last year we had a great line up of bands at the Plastered stage this year will be even better and we still have a couple of slots for anyone interested bands, please contact me at dominic@plasteredtshirts.com if you are interested in playing (please send a link to some of your music).
