I’ve always been a huge fan of
Rock and Roll in China. Each year I’ve been here I’ve tried my best to keep up with the
rock and roll scene
and go to as many gigs as I can. I can remember clearly seeing Dou Wei’s bands Hei Bao perform at the French School back in 1995 when they had no where else to play. There were so many brilliant bands over the last 15 years, Wild Children,
Second Hand Rose, Reflector, – just to name a few –
and Beijing continues to churn out great new bands all the time. The scene here, it seems, is still very alive. Kaiser Kuo could tell you a lot he really lived the scene with his band Tang Dynasty and there are some good blogs that follow the scene here quite well like www.outdustry.com.
So ealier this year I approached a bunch of bands and record labels about producing and selling band t-shirts from Plastered offering a great deal on the profit sharing so the bands could really benefit from the sales. It is tough to make any real money in Rock and Roll in China. So this month (April) will see the start of our Band T-shirts. We start with Wuliao Contingent and PK-14 (coming late April) with many other big acts to follow. This will be unique to Plastered, so come by and support the bands. We collaborate on every design with the bands and I think you’ll like the results. In the case of PK-14 they supplied beautiful artwork that was made for t shirts.

I got an email a few months back from a young enterprising American who loved Plastered T shirts and was organising a fashion show in the USA and wanted to feature our t shirts. They featured 5 designers in total.
The show benefitted the China Care Foundation
Here are a few pictures from the show.

Ten years ago was one of the most exciting times in my life in terms of music at least. The Scream club in Beijing was packed most nights and performing were a bunch of really great punk bands who collectively were known as Wu Liao Jun Dui (The Bored Army). Among the contingent were the likes of Brain Failure and Reflector both of whom regularly still tour.
April 18th 2009 in Mao Live House there will be a ten year anniversary party. We at Plastered have recreated the original wuliao contingent T shirt, one of which i still own and wear and will be wearing on the night. The new ones will be on sale at the show, all the money from the sale of the shirts will go straight to the bands.
It will be a great night for music and memories. These guys were the original Beijing punks.

Plastered and danwei.org have teamed up for an online competition to designdanwei.org a t-shirt. The winning design wins 888 RMB cash so give it a go. I’ll be judging the designs along with a panel of very interesting folk. Once the winning design is chosen Plastered will tweak it so it’s silk screen friendly and then you’ll be able to buy the design exclusively from Plastered outlets.

State television made a cracking documentary about the history of Nan Luo Gu Xiang and interviewed those who have lived on the street or been a part in its recent change. Plastered was featured as one of the more recent influences on this brilliant hu tong – watch documentary on openv.com.
And here is a follow up documentary specifically about Plastered and our history on Nan Luo Gu Xiang: Plastered on Nan Luo Gu Xiang.

Back in 2008 I was appraoched by one of London England’s most successful t-shirt brands: Terratag. Terratag has taken the European t-shirt market by storm with its brilliant manga and other related graphics. Terratag and Plastered promptly signed a deal to distribute each other’s designs in their respective countries. We then worked on a design together, a collaboration, using one of Terratag’s robot concept, and our pottery print design concept. The result was a brilliant robot, or “Willowbot” (see t-shirts below). This week, I received this post, from Sine Wave (Sine Wave Company builds software to make virtual worlds more compelling and exciting, running virtual events and sells animations and robots) featuring a very cool bit of animation of our robot: http://www.sinewavecompany.com/willowbot
Keep a look out in April for Terratag products that will be available in our store for a limited time only. We shall keep you posted with email updates as to when everything is up and running. Sign up for our updates on our homepage (www.plasteredtshirts.com)

Sponsoring music in China is one of our greatest passions. Our work withmicromu has resulted in one that we are particularly proud of. Here is a great song by Jeff Zhang, singer song writer from Carsick Cars recorded by micromu and sponsored by Plastered T-shirts. The song, Dead Flower, has been viewed on many Chinese sites and blogs and also on international sites. It becomes increasingly popular by the day. Carsick Cars have a new album coming out May 1st with the maybemars record label and we are very excited about its release. Stay tuned tomicromu.com for more events and live records supported by Plastered T-shirts.
